Posted by seomoz.org/users/view/111032″>adamf

First, let me make a quick introduction. Normally, I spend my time focused on new products at seomoz, working with a great team of people that design and build our new tools and features. Today I am excited to use my first blog post to announce our new seomoz.org/seo-toolbar”>seo toolbar for Firefox, and tell you about some of the powerful features we have added.

seomoz.org/seo-toolbar”>seonews.seolair.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/5d442_download-seo-toolbar2.jpg” alt=”Download the seo Toolbar” />

As a quick reminder, all of these new features are free, and will be available to anyone who downloads the Firefox seo Toolbar!  However, we still reserve advanced link data for PRO members.

So, on to the features. To add a little color to my descriptions, I’ve also asked some seo experts you may recognize to preview the toolbar and talk about how they use the new features.

1. New SERP Overlay

This new Search Engine Results Page overlay was designed to offer the most relevant link data without getting in the way. You can now use our toolbar to see which search results are getting the most links, and click Explore to run a full analysis in Open Site Explorer. To turn on this overlay, click the settings button on the toolbar, and select SERP Overlay.

I find it easiest to understand the new metrics by seeing them on search results I’m familiar with; as an added bonus, this is one of the most helpful analyses you can do when looking at a new SERP for the first time." –Will Critchlow

2. Page Authority and Domain Authority

Page Authority and Domain Authority have taken their place as the primary metrics in the toolbar. These two predictive metrics will give you the best indication of how authoritative pages and domains are. If you miss having mozRank and mozTrust available at a glance, don’t despair!  You can add these back into the toolbar by selecting them from the settings menu.

3. Surf Like a Search Engine

We have added new settings that allow you to hide images, turn off JavaScript, and even set your user agent. This will help you see pages like the search engines do, and identify potential bad page behaviors. And just to help out, we’ve added a handy little overlay to keep you aware of when any of these features are set. Just click the link in the overlay and all of your settings will return to normal.

richardbaxter<a rel=seo” class=”user_photo” src=”http://seonews.seolair.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/78dbd_44209.jpg” /> "The new user agent switching means I’ve removed another plug-in from Firefox. I love my seo plugins but I also think there’s such a thing as having too many. Go for simplicity is what I always say. Special love goes out to disable JavaScript, too – I actually caught a nice bit of hidden link spam with this last week! Disable images is a sure fire way to check out the image alt attributes on a web page too. Nice." –Richard Baxter

willcritchlowseonews.seolair.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/78dbd_21379.jpg” /> "I don’t want to take credit for an awesome feature. OK. I want to take credit for an awesome feature. After constantly forgetting I was surfing as googlebot and getting chucked out of Google calendar etc I asked for this feature and it’s just as awesome as I hoped it would be. "

4. New Data in the Analyze Page Overlay

Our analyze page overlay has also been enhanced with a number of new, useful data points, including

  • Page Download Time – this becomes more important with Google’s announcement that speed matters.
  • Text to Code Ratio – Is there more code on your page than content? Don’t make the search engines sift through too much code to find the relevant content.
  • HTTP status codes – Find out the status code of the current page, and learn which redirects were involved in getting you there.

Status Code<br />

seonews.seolair.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/e58df_63.jpg” class=”user_photo” alt=”randfish” /> "The overlay is still the most valuable thing for me. I must use it 5+ times every day to get quick info about how many links are on a page, whether it’s using rel="canonical" or whether the keywords are properly included in the right page elements. I hate using ‘view source’ and searching through code; overlay FTW!" –Rand Fishkin

seonews.seolair.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/e58df_78590.jpg” class=”user_photo” alt=”RobOusbey” /> "The http status codes feature is my favourite new addition to the tool. There’s not more reloading and hunting through LiveHTTPHeaders reports – this lets me very easily see the redirect route taken in getting to the current page." –Rob Ousbey

5. Quick Access to Tools from seomoz and Third Parties

The tools dropdown has been expanded to include fast access to the latest seomoz tools as well as a wealth of other helpful resources, including traffic data, Twitter tools, and domain info.

Whiteboard Friday – Faceted Navigation

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Posted by seomoz.org/users/view/21348″>great scott!

So last week Eric Enge interviewed everybody’s favorite Spam Cop, blog/”>Matt Cutts (not to be confused with everybody’s favorite Axe Cop), about all sorts of juicy Googleyness. You can read the whole enchilada over at Stone Temple, or view an seomoz.org/blog/an-illustrated-guide-to-matt-cutts-comments-on-crawling-indexation”>illustrated version Rand put together (I recommend you do both, it’s really good material).

The interview shed a lot of light but also inspired some confusion and questions, especially about how much of a site Big G will or won’t crawl.  If you’ve got a big site, say an e-commerce site with lots of flexible navigation and categorization, this could be a big problem for you. Fear not!  This week’s Whiteboard Friday will show you a clean, simple way to allow for both great usability for your visitors and compact, straightforward crawlability for the engines.

Professionalism

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Some people email you out of the blue accusing you of things that are not true while being rude and condescending. One person stated that they were certain I sold their email and that I am unethical and etc etc etc

My response was short and sweet
“go ___ yourself. we don’t sell our user information.”

To which there was a response about how I am not very professional. And the thing is, how are you supposed to respond when people falsely accuse you of criminal conduct while using your services for free AND insulting you?

Is there a professional way to respond?

Does the person who gave you no benefit of the doubt, insulted you, and wasted your time somehow deserve the benefit of the doubt? If yes, why? They certainly didn’t give you any.

The way I look at business is that being short and sweet (or short and sour, in some cases) is probably one of the most professional things you can do. You only have so many hours to live and you only have so much time to service paying customers. The worst thing you could do is give someone like that the benefit of the doubt after they walked all over you, because then they might become a customer. And that type of person tends to be abusive, lazy, rude, selfish, and ignorant. Not a good customer.

If you don’t enjoy what you do then its best to stop doing it. Part of ensuring work is enjoyable is filtering out those who do not fit.

So if a person says “___ off” at hello, then, if you are concerned with professionalism, reciprocating is the best thing you can possibly do. Any other course of action simply wastes time that could be spent servicing real customers – which certainly isn’t very professional.

Rhea Drysdale – SEO Industry Hero

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Anywhere there is controversy you will find many marketers who will opine and try to shine the lights on themselves about how wonderful they are and how much they help everyone else and how everyone should link to them in the controversy. But when the attention dies down it turns out few marketers hold true to their promises and stick with their principals.

It is usually the unsung heroes that make a difference, not as a cheesy marketing strategy, but because they believe in doing the right thing, even if it is at great personal cost.

Not sure if you remember the hoopla about Jason Gambert (professional douchebag) trying to trademark the word seo, but many industry professionals were up in arms about it. In spite of some of the larger companies having big-jaws-a-flapping and in house legal teams, and the industry having perhaps some of the MOST USELESS AND SELF PROMOTIONAL cash flush “non-profit” trade organizations in the entire world (cough…SEMPO…cough), Rhea Drysdale was left to seo/seo-trademark-application-terminated/”>spend a couple years and $17,004.33 fighting the bogus trademark.

A few years back I spent about $35,000 to $40,000 fighting Traffic Power, and while it was painful back then, to this day I am glad I did it. But one of the things that surprised me back then was that for all the noise, few people cared enough to offer a $1 to help fight the good fight. Some friends seobook.com/traffic-power/”>helped in a big way…but I was still like $30,000+ in the hole and stuck dealing with a lot of stress.

Lets not leave Rhea with that feeling. ;)

Her Paypal email address is rhea_drysdale@yahoo.com. I just donated $566.81, and if about 29 more of us do the same, then we will help cover her legal expenses. Even if you can’t donate that much, every $ helps…given the size of the industry (and the alleged concern certain individuals showed) we should easily be able to cover 100% of her legal fees. Even at the $50 or $100 level, it will still add up quickly with your help. Please seolair.com/”>blog/about/”>shower Rhea with links too…she earned them :D

Update: Its worth adding that Jonathan Hochman collaborated early in this case with Rhea and choose a different legal strategy. He also spent about $10k fighting this battle but the court threw out his challenge on a technicality, so while many of the other industry supporters were nothing more than self promoters, Jonathan is also a good guy here.

The goal of all business, including online ones, is to deliver value to all concerned. Unfortunately, many people are so driven by the short term focus that they never really give their customers any significant value. Being able to deliver high quality and a good value to your customers time and time again is crucial. Whether you’re trying to bring in new customers, keep your established customers interested or you want to set up a joint enterprise, if you don’t have value for your customers you’re going to be found lacking as a whole. You must study your target market intensely so that you understand their every need.

Assuming that you concentrate exclusively on providing great service at fair prices to your market segment, attraction marketing will yield solid end results. If you want people to be repeat customers, buying from you over and over you need to make providing value to your customers your most important priority. Not only will you bring in new customers but you’ll also be able to work with them for a lifetime. When you’re looking into building a joint venture with another business it is very important to consider the value you offer. You do obviously need to maintain your profit margin, but it is important to do whatever is possible to offer assistance to those that need it. Doing this will bring in the right consumers who accredit your truthfulness and transparency, providing you with greater sales in your future business ventures. Many potential customers will be drawn to the positive vibe from your business that no one else has. A good idea is to deliver this value through content. Whatever sort of content you offer be sure it is valuable and exists there with a purpose in mind. Keep the content on your site and even the navigation easy to understand. When the potential customer visits the site, they should be able to get a grasp on how it works without putting much thought into it. Good customer encounter is an essential aspect in developing a good lasting impression over your potential consumer, do not put that in jeopardy.

All you do needs to be focused on giving them the value they want even when dealing business partners. It is always desirable to focus on your goal for your business of garnering profits. You have to look beyond the immediate sale and look at the value of giving someone a good deal. This is how you produce what is known as real value. The great advantages of letting your targeted purchasers see the larger purpose, and being straightforward in your business practices cannot be overstated. It will also encourage a lot of positive word of mouth for your products. The content of your online business should emphasize in every possible way that you are customer-oriented and will deliver the best possible products to your clientele. Make sure everything on the website is crystal clear and easy to understand. You do not want people who end up clicking your banners or advertisements to not be able to find what they came for. People who feel that they spent their time well after they’ve gotten to your website will also feel like they want to return and purchase more.

The Internet is a big place, which means you’ll have new competition coming up every now and then. With so much out there to choose from, you must make yourself stand out in some regard. Make sure you put some of your personality into your site. You are unequaled in what you do, and you must let everyone know it. Attraction marketing puts a great emphasis on having your own Unique Selling Point in place and not getting lost with other similar businesses.

If you want your online business to stand out from all the others, it must be different in significant ways. This doesn’t necessarily mean bigger is better, as even a website created on a smaller scale can create a memorable experience for visitors. In this case, “USP” stands for “Unique Selling Point” and is the element that makes your product or service stand out in people’s minds. Pay attention to details that will make your seolair.com/”>blog look polished and professional if it is to become a part of your business. If you don’t have the skills, hire someone or outsource the work. Your attitude will make all the difference. The key to your success lies in how you are seen by other people. Avoid ready made web templates that will make you look just like the thousands of other websites out there on the web.

Most internet shoppers and browsers are fairly intelligent now, and they won’t hesitate to do a little background work to see if you are of quality or not. If the quality of your products or services is lacking your customers can find out just by doing a few simple searches. Don’t get carried away, but know that you can let your individualistic characteristics shine through and influence the material on your web pages. No matter how much you inject yourself, you still need to have a professional outlook. It is not hard to implement attraction marketing if you play your cards correctly. It will help you in creating some long term relationships with a lot of people. All you need to do is remain positive and ensure that you provide nothing but quality and value to your customers.

Finally, one of your best strategies is to make sure that you have quality in every single aspect of your online enterprise. Everything needs to be top notch from your email replies, to your website, and even posts on a seolair.com/”>blog. Do not settle for less. In order to maximize the impact of your attraction marketing, aim for simplicity and professionalism in all things connected with your business.
